Senior Metrology Engineer
Diamond Foundry
Our Materials Science & Metrology team plays a crucial role in ensuring quality, precision, and consistency of our single crystal diamond technology. We are seeking a Senior Metrology Engineer to lead metrology initiatives, develop advanced characterization techniques, and drive improvement in quality and process control. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, process engineering, and manufacturing, to establish robust measurement methodologies, improve metrology capabilities, and ensure compliance with stringent quality standards. This role requires expertise in advanced thermal characterization techniques, specifically Frequency-Domain Thermoreflectance (FDTR), and a deep understanding of thermal transport in semiconductors and wide-bandgap materials like single-crystal diamond. |
Responsibilities
Take full technical ownership of advanced thermal characterization systems; lead installation, calibration, and long-term maintenance of the metrology fleet.
Develop, validate, and optimize measurement protocols for various material systems, ranging from bulk crystals to thin films, with a focus on thermal conductivity and Thermal Boundary Resistance (TBR).
Apply numerical methods, including Monte Carlo simulations, to model heat transfer and correlate experimental data with physical material properties.
Build and maintain automated data analysis tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and integration with process flows.
Partner with R&D, Process, and Manufacturing teams to provide failure analysis and actionable insights based on thermal performance data.
Support metrology operations across our facilities within the Bay Area, with the ability to travel occasionally between locations (SSF/Fremont).
Requirements
PhD with 1+ years, Master’s with 2+ years, or Bachelor’s with 4+ years of experience in Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering.
Strong foundation in semiconductor physics and thermal management. Hands-on experience with FDTR/TDTR (including tool qualification and maintenance) is mandatory.
Experience in thermal modeling and Monte Carlo methods for microscale heat transfer is highly preferred.
Deep understanding of wide-bandgap semiconductors or carbon-based materials (diamond) is highly preferred.
Proficiency in statistical analysis (SPC, JMP) and programming for data modeling (Python or MATLAB).
Excellent communication and strong problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to explain complex thermal phenomena to cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment..
